1. Definition of the Protective Relaying?

Protective relay is a device that detect the fault and initiates the operation of the circuit barker and isolate the defective element from rest of the system.  

2. Fundamental Requirements of Protective Relaying? 

There are six Basic Fundamental Requirements of Protective Relaying

(i) selectivity (iv) reliability

(ii) speed (v) simplicity
